Rubberwood is the wood from the Para rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). Originally found in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, this hardy species is now grown in many tropical areas, notably in Southeast Asia. While rubberwood (also referred to as parawood) has long been used on a small scale, large plantations now produce huge quantities of the wood for export and domestic use.

Wood from the rubber tree is known as an environmentally friendly product, because it provides a secondary use for trees that have already served a useful purpose. Rubber trees typically produce marketable latex for a period of about thirty years; in the past, once the trees ceased to produce useable rubber, they were burned to make room for new plantings. However, plantation owners recognized that the trees, which are plentiful and easy to grow, could be used in the manufacture of affordable indoor furniture and other wood products.
Rubber tree wood is light and sturdy. In addition, its dense grain ensures that the boards hold their shape well and do not shrink when dried in a kiln, making them ideal for use in furniture and flooring. The wood is also resistant to insects, mold and fungus, and it is compatible with most industrial adhesives used in the manufacture of home furnishings.
This versatile wood, also known by the more elegant sounding names, "white mahogany" or "Malaysian Oak," is also used for making items as diverse as children's toys and cutting boards.
